Anti-Virus on go-slow

The anti-virus system went on a go-slow again last night, but this time I caught it within a few hours and managed to get things going before too long. Nothing was lost but a few emails were delayed in getting through. If you tried to post anything in the last few hours you may have got a temporary send issue... just to confuse things :-(

Sending Problems?

Some people have been saying they are having problems sending email using their Webspider Dot Org accounts. As far as I can make out the problems are due to people trying to send their mail using other peoples servers and not the Webspider server. The Webspider server has security setting such that you are NOT allowed to send email preporting to be from webspider.org if you do not use our server to send the email.

When many ISPs set up their dial-up connections or broadband connections with their CD installations, they change the servers that email is sent with to their own - that way they can "manage" what email you do send. Due to our security settings this will prevent you from sending Webspider email to many addresses (but not all).

The only way to fix this is to go into the account setting for your mail client and change the server back to mail.webspider.org (and make sure that you have entered your username & password).

The "!!! HELP !!!" section has details about setting up your email account within Outlook Express.

If you are using "Windows Mail" with Vista, go to the Accounts menu item under the Tools menu, select the appropriate account and press the properties button. Select the Servers tab and make sure that the"Outgoing mail (SMTP)" server is set to mail.webspider.org. At the bottom of that dialog is a checkbox that says "My server requires authentication"; make sure that is ticked and that the settings are that your outgoing user is the same as your incoming user.

If that does not fix your problems than you may have to check your firewall settings too...

Mail Server Delays

Last night the anti-virus filter stopped working at some stage around 4:30am. This meant that all email in and out of the system would have stopped being allowed through. I programmed it this way to make sure that if the anti-spam or anti-virus system stopped we would not get flooded by virus and spam emails...

The email system is back up and running and I have now put a monitoring system in place to monitor this program so that I will get told about it a bit quicker
