I am a great advocate of open source software, not just so that I can run cool programs, but that many people from different positions and countries can pool their resources to come up with programs that we all like. Being able to expand on someone elses idea and know that it will then be used by many more people is a very satisfying experience!

Yes, we all do have to make some money from somewhere so that we can live... What is the difference between being sponsered by someone to extend some open source software and being paid by someone to write some software? The one side benefits a lot of people and the other benefits a few. If I could encourage software writers to do one thing, I would say "go out there and get involved in at least one open source project!"
